Red Son with a Soviet Superman.

Movie – Superman: Red Son

Year – 2020

Director – Sam Liu

Mark Millar’s alternate reality was released earlier this year on video (online, downloads, and possibly OTT’s ) based on his version of the man of steel landing in Mother Russia and raised with Russian ideals. This time around Superman is raised to be the champion of the common worker and Stalin’s vision of Socialism instead of Truth, Justice, and the American Way. I have always been a fan of WB Animation, somehow they have managed to tell better stories on this medium that the ones made for the screen (exception the Dark Knight Trilogy or the Original Superman). This version of the Kryptonian tale was much better than the Synder rendition for Man of Steel. It engages on many levels, especially with the alternate versions of Revolutionary Batman, Wonder Woman with Hal Jordan, and the army of Lanterns. But most of all I loved the Diedrich Badder’s version of Lex Luthor, he was just the perfect balance between good and evil. Then there is Brainiac, a villain I sorely missed in the League Movies or Movie (whichever cut). It’s too early for a Doomsday arrival, but Brainiac/Luthor combination that could Pg-13 the dark tones and make it more pleasurable.

RS-2The story goes when a rocket lands in Russia with a baby for another world, who grows up to be Superman, the champion of Stalin, who hides his intention of a perfect state under a veil. A veil that gives birth to this version of revolutionary Batman. Superman destroys Stalin and takes over the State like a Big Brother with his own version of Utopia. Elsewhere, the C.I.A hire Luthor to deal with this kind of power held by the Russians, and the nuclear arms race makes the way of a race to create metahumans. Red Son takes on Superior Man, a battle that exemplifies how wars are fought in the boardrooms than on the battlefield by strong men. So is really superior. Then comes Brainiac, who shrinks an entire city down to size but is eventually overcome by Superman. Redesigned to do the biding of the State and monitor the world for Red Son. The utopia begins but brings in the revolutionaries, namely an altered version of the Dark Knight, gruesome, relentless, merciless, and more like a vigilante out for justice. Superman: Red Son offers a good viewing with a story that parallels two ideas of state and a different take on the quest for power for two nations, eventually leading to the fall of one. Worth Watching.
